We spend a lot of time and effort working on our Managed Application Services pricing. It needs to reflect the value we bring to our customers but also, and importantly, align our incentives with theirs.

Too often we’ve seen contracts and pricing structures that incentivise:

1) keeping interactions at a minimum
2) discouraging the micro-services approach by charging the same fee per server/VM

We find both troublesome: the former is effectively the opposite of what DevOps advocates and the latter turns a technical decision (should you have more but smaller services?) into an accounting one (can we afford it?)

Our pricing therefore becomes cheaper (per unit) as you add more servers/VMs.

We strive for a formula that takes all of that into consideration, without making it hard to understand and calculate it quickly. Our pricing therefore becomes cheaper (per unit) as you add more servers/VMs.

But we believe it would be fairer still to also recognise that adding yet another VM of an already existing service (e.g. a Solr cluster) should cost less than a new VM for a completely new service. If this is your situation, let’s talk!

Last but not least, you will notice the chart above stops at 1000 servers/VMs and it’s not a coincidence: we strongly believe that, should you have more than 1000 you would be better off by having an internal team.

Of course we would be happy to help you create it, train it and make it productive.
